A married-family garden, is in those PUMAs (Public Use Microdata Areas) in which the share of households with children that are headed by a married couple is at least 79 percent.

In these areas, children are most likely to be raised in households headed by married parents and to be surrounded by peers growing up in married-couple families—conditions associated with higher levels of relational security at both the household and neighborhood level.

The list below ranks the ten PUMAs with the highest shares of “households with children headed by a married couple”, among PUMAs with substantial numbers of households with children.

Across these areas, the share of households with children headed by a married couple ranges from 86.7 percent to 88.9 percent.

America’s most extreme married-family garden is in Alameda County, CA which includes Fremont City, in part of the wider Bay Area.

Of the 14,759 households with children, the share headed by a married couple is 88.9%.

America’s second most extreme married-family garden is in Southwest Santa Clara County, CA, includes Cupertino, Saratoga and Los Gatos.

Of the 18,801 households with children, the share headed by a married couple is 88.4%.

America’s third most extreme married-family garden is in Lakewood, NJ.

Of the 16,942 households with children, the share headed by a married couple is 88.4%.

America’s fourth most extreme married-family garden is in Utah County (East)—Spanish Fork, Springville, Lehi, and HIghland Cities—UT.

Of the 23,454 households with children, the share headed by a married couple is 88%.

America’s fifth most extreme married-family garden is in Utah County (West)—Saratoga Springs, Payson, and Southwest parts of Lehi—UT.
